Radon is a "daughter" or progeny of the radioactive decay of common radioisotopes in the environment. The "normal" concentration of radon in the outdoor environment is pretty much negligible, but it may become concentrated within a home if it has energy-saving sealing to prevent outside air from seeping in (it's ironic that this feature actually increases the infiltration of radon gas).
