An inversion is a special case of a stable
atmosphere. We will look at it closely because the extreme stability of a layer
of air containing an inversion prevents vertical dispersion and helps trap pollution
near the ground.
Note that inversions have negative lapse
rates. A negative number is always less than a positive number, and the
dry adiabatice lapse rate (10°C/km) is always positive, so a temperature
inversion is always stable.
