Area is two-dimensional; length is one-dimensional. The calculation of the area of a shape may be complex if the shape is non-rectangular; however, the units of the area value are still length squared.

Volume adds a third dimension to area. In fact, for certain shapes it's just the cross-sectional area times the depth. In any event, the units of volume are length cubed.
