For students entering UCLA in Fall 2002 and after:

Your GE requirements in "Foundations of Scientific Inquiry" are 18 units with at least:

• One 5-unit course in Physical Science with a lab/demo component, OR
• One 5-unit course in Life Science with a lab/demo component

This means you need two or more science courses of 4 or 5 units (or more) each (either Physical or Life Science or both) and they do not need to have a lab/demo component.

You have two options:

• Take A&O Sci 2 and A&O Sci 2L concurrently for a total of 5 units. This will satisfy the Physical Sciences w/lab component requirement.
• Take A&O Sci 2 only (no lab) for 4 units. This will count toward the "Scientific Inquiry" requirement but not the Physical Sciences w/lab requirement. You will need to take another Physical Science course that has a lab (may I shamelessly suggest A&O Sci 3 + A&O Sci 3L, or A&O Sci 1 + A&O Sci 1L?).

General information about the lab for everyone

The lab section and the lecture/discussion are to be taken together. You cannot get credit for the lab in a separate quarter.

Lab Assignments. There will be four lab assignments, starting in the first or second week of classes. Some of these assignments will be worksheets where you do some calculations and write up explanations (or enter them in a form on a web page). Some may require you to search the web for data/observations and news articles, or use an online calculator or interactive module, so you will need some sort of Internet access.

Communication about the lab assignments. Information about the labs, availability of lab worksheets, due dates, and such is broadcasted by mass email or described in lecture. You must have a valid email address entered into the Registrar's system via URSA. Failure to do so may mean you may miss some important messages about the labs. If you are not a UCLA student or otherwise are having difficulty registering your email address, you can also get information directly from this web page.

There will be no formal classroom meetings of the lab section.

Grading. Each lab assignment is worth 25 points. The final course grade for the lecture and lab will be a single grade based on the points earned from the lecture section and the lab section added together (i.e., out of 1100 points). Your transcript will show two separate grades, one for the lecture and one for the lab, but they will be the same (unless you set one for a letter grade and the other P/NP). The grade breakdown will be the same percentages noted for the lecture section.

You must write up your own labs. While you may collaborate with other students in the course while you work on the labs, you cannot have people not enrolled in the course help you with the labs or do the lab work for you. Students who have proxies complete their lab work will have the assignments put on deferred status and the case will be prosecuted by the Office of the Dean of Students.
